Our budgie gets frightened of a bowl of water or dishes sold for bathing but loves to bathe in her water dish. Of course we change her water when she finishes. It was her idea to bathe in the water dish.
Aw, that's so cute. ;) My parakeets are either petrified of water or are culprits of spilling/ splashing it constantly, whether in a bowl or in a drinking container.
This post helped me to know about the illusion of control. I think it is the tendency for people to overrate their ability to control different events.
