Brilliant eyes and beautiful colours

One thing you may not know about is that budgerigars have the ability to see our world in colour, just like humans. They have no trouble registering different colour nuances, so put those old black and white movies away! :)
Other than that, budgerigars can hear you well and feel you even better. Some even say that budgerigars are able to sense the coming of future events. One thing is for sure: they have truly amazing senses.

Count to six
Scientists have tried to find out how smart budgies are. They carried out an experiment in which the birds had to count. The scientists took a few food bowls, filled them up with food and closed them with a lid. They had painted dots on the lids. After that, they showed the budgies little wooden signs, also with dots painted on it.When they showed the budgies a sign with four dots, the budgies had to open a food bowl with the same number of dots painted on it. This way, budgies learned to count up to six! Not many animals can do this.

Eat like a bird
photo: birdaday.com
My fiancé often tells me that I "eat like a bird", but he doesn't know half of it :)
If you eat like a budgie, that really means you eat a lot. Budgies can eat up to 20% of their body weight every day! A man weighing 80 kg would have to eat 16 kg to catch up on the equivalent amount.

Owl or budgie?

It may sound a bit scary, but budgies are sort of like owls in the sense that they can turn their heads 180 degrees. They would have so much fun on Halloween ;)
But it has a larger purpose: this ability gives them a great visual, enabling them to look in all directions and spot a predator before that predator gets a chance to attack.
